Step 8 Installing the CPU Cooler

Installing the CPU Cooler

I chose to install the Processor heat sink / fan assembly after the power supply and RAM because the heat sink/fan assembly would have gotten into the way of the other components that were being installed. If there is enough room in the case I would be able to install the fan/heat sink assembly after the Processor. I chose to install an arctic cooler heat sink fan assembly over the stock assembly because I personally felt it would offer better than cooling of the processor. The downfall to using a bigger heat sink / fan assembly is that it may not fit into some smaller computer cases, or it may get in the way of other components in the computer case. In most cases, the stock heat sink/fan assembly will supply sufficient cooling for the processor. I checked the size to make sure it fit into my computer case before attempting to install it. Now I have to unpack the heat sink /fan assembly and inspect it for damage.

On the left is the stock fan / heat sink assembly and on the right is the arctic cooler fan/heat sink assembly I will be using.

The first step that I had to do was remove both the fan from the heat sink assembly. Then I had to remove the protective cover from the heat sink where it would mount to the processor. If I was using the stock heat sink/fan assembly, the fan would not need to be taken off because it would not be in the way during installation.

Taking the protective cover off of the heat sink assembly

With this heat sink/fan assembly I have a choice on which way I want the fan to face. I chose to face the fan so that it would blow towards the fan in the power supply assembly instead of directly on one of the video cards. Now it is time to install the heat sink assembly. The heat sink will need to be placed over the processor and the mounting pins need to be lined up on the motherboard. When this has been done the mounting pins will need to be pushed in until they click and then rotated in the proper direction. (Note: This will vary depending on different processors and heat sink/fan assemblies. Always check the user guide for instructions.)

Mounting the heat sink to the motherboard

Now that the heat sink is in place I need to install the fan assembly on the heat sink and plug the fan connector into the proper slot on the motherboard. I then need to check my motherboard manual to find the proper motherboard connector location. (Note: on this particular heat sink / fan assembly, installation of the fan is very easy because it clips right to the heat sink. The fan can also be adjusted slightly either up or down on the heat sink assembly. I had to move it up just to ensure it would not hit any of the components inside the computer. )
